On the whole, I am not pessimistic about the future, because regimes are becoming more democratic – throughout the world, even in the Soviet Union and the communist countries. The intelligentsia must, in the long run, win back its rights, and the most important of those rights is freedom of expression, both scientific and political. I cannot believe that the Arab countries will be the exception to this rule. Even Syria will have to adapt.
